!!! LEGENDS Claim World Series Crown !!!
Gookie Dawkins Experience and The Legends square off in
a wiffleball World Series for the ages
GDE and the Legends squared off on Monday, August 16th, 2010 for the 1st ever
Central Ohio Wiffleball League World Series. GDE had advanced in the National League
by soundly defeating The U and the Legends had advanced by virtue of their narrow
victory over divisional rival Wall To Wall.
GDE came into the World Series riding a winning streak of 17 consecutive victories.
The Series turned out to be exactly what World Series should be like. There were wild
comebacks, diving defensive plays, crushing homeruns and walk-off winners.
Due to the American League victory in the All-Star games, GDE had home field advantage,
hosting the first 2 games on SILA field. Dave Page started on the mound for GDE and the Legends
got off to a quick start, scoring 6 runs in the top of the 1st on 2 HRs by Jerry Driggs and 1 by Levi.
Ben Cydrus started for the Legends but the start was short as GDE launched 5 HRs of their own in
inning 1, eventually hitting a HR off of all Legends, who pitched every player in inning 1 in an attempt
to reign in the GDE rally. The inning ended with Levi on the mound and the score GDE 9, Legends 6.
GDE managed to put up a 0 in inning 2 and responded with 6 more runs in the bottom half of
the inning. Down 15-6 the Legends launched their own barrage, scoring 11 runs each in the 3rd and
4th innings on 11 HRs. GDE was steady, scoring 5 and 6 runs to make the score 28-26 Legends
entering the final frame.
The Legends managed to put up only 2 runs and entered the bottom half of the last inning with
a 4 run cushion. They managed to retire Eric on a pop-up for out 1 but could not get the 2nd out.
After scoring 2 runs on base hits and misplayed grounders, Eric approached the plate with the bases
loaded and 1 out. After several foul balls Eric delivered, driving a 2 strike pitch over the left field fence
for a walk-off 32-30 marathon victory to put GDE up 1-0 in the series. Not only did Eric crush the
game winning HR, he also had 3 others and 9 total RBIs.
GDE showed their characteristic balance, with Andy Russell crushing 7 HRs and driving in 9 RBIs,
Dave Page crushing 5 HRs and driving in 7 and leadoff man Blake Lansing hitting 3 HRs of his own and
delivering 7 RBIs. Andy could not be kept in the park and Blake made fantastic catch after fantastic
catch to seal the victory.
Game 2 continued in a positive note for GDE as they retired the Legends quickly and again ravaged
the pitching of Jerry and Ben, the Legends primary pitchers, for 10 runs in the bottom half of the 1st. The
Legends started the comeback trail in inning 2 via a pair of home runs by Levi Driggs to tally 6 runs. Levi
also managed to hold GDE to 1 run in the bottom half, leaving the score at 11-6.
Levi and Jerry owned inning 3 crushing 3 home runs each and tallying 12 runs. GDE responded
with 6 runs of their own to make the score 18-17 Legends after 3. Levi again smashed 2 HRs in innning 4
and the Legends put up 6 more runs. GDE went on a tear of their own, putting up 8 big runs in the inning
to lead 25-24 after 4 innings.
The 5th inning was Levi's once more as he delivered 3 more HRs while driving in 10 RBIs as the
Legends scored 11 runs. GDE made a valliant comeback, but fell short, scoring 6 runs but losing in the
end 36-31.
For the game, Levi Driggs set the single game HR and RBI records with 10 HRS and 25 RBIs,
and terminated the GDE win streak at 18.
Game 3 moved to TLC field with the Legends being home team and the series being tied 1-1.
Ben Cydrus found his pitching stroke and held GDE to their first egg in the top half of inning 1. The Legends
found home field advantage to their liking and eventually scored 10 runs as all 4 Legends players responded
with HRs in the frame. Ben held GDE to 2 runs in the top half of inning 2 and then the team tacked on 8
more runs via 2 more Levi HRs to lead 18-2.
GDE and the Legends traded runs in the 3rd. GDE got untracked in the top of the 4th, creating
a rally resulting in 7 runs, but fell short as the Legends won game 2, 21-18, and moved ahead 2 games to 1
in the series. Ben Cydrus recorded his 9th pitching win on the year.
Game 4 began the way games 1 and 2 had, with the visiting team jumping ahead on a 5 run GDE
inning. The Legends answered with 7 runs of their own. By this time the air had gotten much heavier and
HRs were in short supply. Phil King hit a key 3 run shot in inning 1 to match a 3 run blast by Andy. Inning
2 saw GDE scoring 2 runs on a 2 run HR by Dave Page. The Legends went cold, suffering their first
scoreless inning in 2 games and resulting in a 7-7 tie after 2 innings.
Jerry had found his pitching form and held GDE blank in the top half of the 3rd. The Legends
went ahead to stay on a 3 run blast by Levi, his last of the night. GDE managed to score a single run in the
bottom of the 4th and the Legends were once again held to naught in their half of the inning, resulting in a
score of 10-8. GDE put 2 runners on base via hits in the top of the 5th, but with the go-ahead run at bat
were not able to capitalize and the game ended with the Legends winning 10-8.
For GDE, Andy Russell totaled 20 HRs on the night, to accompany an impressive 31 RBIs. Dave
Page added 11 HRs and 18 RBIs. Eric Lewis made a number of diving plays at shortstop to go with the
8 HRs and 23 RBIs he accumulated. Blake Lansing was everywhere in the field, robbing hit after hit from
the Legends on screaming line drives. Blake also added 5 HRs and 12 RBIs and was very difficult to keep
off base.
For the Legends, Levi Driggs had a career and record splitting night. His 19 HRs led to 55 RBIs,
20 more than the previous 4 game league record. Levi also anchored the Legends pitching staff, a totally
new position for him as he recorded exactly 0 wins during the season and pitched in less than 5 total innings.
Levi was the winner of game 2. Jerry Driggs added 15 HRs and 29 RBIs to the team tally and recorded his
10th pitching win of the year in game 4. Phil King had his customary consistent night at the plate, delivering
5 HRs to accompany 10 RBIs. Phil also played a huge part on the mound, coming in for long relief in 3 of the
4 games. Ben Cydrus added 4 timely HRs and 8 RBIs, but his biggest contribution was repeatedly getting
on base via any means possible. Ben also made some stellar plays in the field and won his 8th game of the
year in game 3.
For the series the Legends scored 96 runs, for an average of 24 per game. GDE scored a total of
86, for an average of 21.50. Congratulations to both teams on a nail-biting, junkyard-scrap, backyard-brawl,
heavy weight prize fight. Both teams played exceptionally well in the field and were awesome at the plate.

COWL WORLD SERIES MVP Return to Top
Levi Driggs of the Legends
Unlike many of the weeks where there was a close contest for Wiffler of the Week, the
1st COWL World Series MVP selection is a no-brainer.
Levi has created his own Legend with a series for the record books.
In total, Levi crushed 19 HRs, many of the tape measure variety. This newly minted 15
year old smashed the 4 game RBI record by 20, recording 55 RBIs on the night. He also broke
the single game HR and RBI records previously held by Dave Fisher and Jerry Driggs, pulverizing
10 HRs for 25 RBIs in the pivotal game 2 of the series, a game which the Legends won 35-31.
Levi also found a way to slow down a red-hot GDE team at the plate - a feat not even the
leagues' 2 winningest pitchers, Ben Cydrus and Jerry could achieve.
Levi also made several inning ending diving catches for good measure, and played a key part
at the plate and in the field all year for the 2010 COWL World Series Champion Legends, and is
most deserving of the 1st COWL World Series MVP award and has earned and validated his nickname.
Way to go "Crush" !
