2013 3CWL Week 6 Series Summaries Whew ! What a week - finally no rain and we got in over 20 games. Week 6 was a blur and the stats have overwhelmed me - so the narratives will be brief. Next week is the final week with playoff spots up for grabs - potentially even the Contenders Division title, so hold on. Friday night kicked off with the Tigers contesting NFC on CC field, on the really only light air night thus far. This series was the continuation of an opening night start that saw the Tigers squeaking past NFC 8-6 behind Chris Garrard's 3 HR night. Justin Collins added an HR and picked up the win while Tyler Depugh hit NFC's lone HR in game 1. Hoping to steal a game, NFC saw those chances wilt early in game 2 as the Tigers scored 17 runs in the 1st 3 innings on 5 Chris HRs, 4 by Corey Conn and 3 each by Justin and Kevin. Chris picked up the win on the mound and Luke Detty provided the offense for NFC with 3 HRs in the 19-7 loss. Game 3 was much closer as NFC led 12-10 heading to the bottom of the 4th before the Tigers responded with a 7 HR inning to close the game 20-12, and the series 3-0. Justin Collins led the Tigers with4 HRs, Kevin again added 3 and Corey and Chris crushed 2. Luke Detty was once again the offensive star for NFC with 2 HRs. For the series Chris led all hitters with 10 HRs and 14 RBIs, Justin had 8 and 13, Kevin mashed 7 and 11 and newcomer Corey added 6 and 10. Luke Detty hit 5 monster HRs for NFC and Tyler Depugh add 2 with Eric Cox hitting 1. After the first full week - I think we have a winner. Although, the comments I received almost with unanimity from the ML teams (including mine) was that we went too far. Our goal was to even the score and make the more skilled team play just as proficiently against the AAA teams as they have to against other ML teams to win. The Tigers then went on to play Contenders Division leader PVB, who had a newcomer in Jeff Iles in addition to Brandon Kennedy's return and Brent Fisher's company for a total of 6 in the lineup - a very difficult way to attempt to beat one of the best Wiffle ball teams in Ohio. The Tigers jumped on PVB early building a 10-4 lead, and then holding on for a 12-7 victory behind the pitching of Adam Ellars in game 1. Kevin Flax carried the Tigers with 4 HRs and 7 RBIs while Jarren Iles crushed 2 HRs and John Kepler, Jeff Iles and Dave Fisher each added 1. Game 2 with PVB as the home team would even be closer even though the Tigers again jumped out to a lead in inning 1 with 8 runs. PVB bounced back with 6 in the 2nd and the game was tied 9-9 after 3. The teams traded 3 run innings in the 4th but PVB managed to get a crucial goose egg behind the arm of Brandon in inning 5 and them pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the 5th. Dave Fisher hit the lone PVB HR in game 2, while the Tigers were led once again by Kevin Flax with 3 as Justin, Chris and Corey each added 1. The rubber match was a see-saw match with the Tigres taking a 8-7 lead after 3, then outscoring PVB 6-1 in the 4th to post a 14-8 win for pitcher Kevin Flax and a 2-1 series win. For the series the Tigers were consistent, with Kevin Flax leading with 8 HRs and 12 RBIs, while Corey added 7 and 8, Chris added 6 and 11 and Justin contributed 5 and 10. Dave Fisher led PVB with 5 HRs and 12 RBIs while Jarren added 3 HRs and John and Jeff added 1 HR each. The 3rd series of Friday night was also a continuation of opening night, with the Tralfamadorians and UMH picking up with game 2, after TRLF took game 1 on opening night 10-3 behind the pitching of space man Josh Wonderleigh. Corey White provided all the offense needed on night 1 with 4 HRs and 5 RBIs while both Josh and Amos Jones crushed 2 HRs. Game 2 was resumed on TLC field and UMH rebounded behind the pitching and hitting of Ashley Flautt who crushed 3 HRs and drove in 9 RBIs in the 16-9 win. Cody Burdett added 3 HRs in the effort. TRLF was led by Josh and Amos with 3 HRs each while Corey added 2. The rubber match was won by TRLF 17-9 as Corey and Josh teamed up for 7 HRs - 4 by Corey as Amos and Brandon Jinks both added 1. Amos took the win on the mound. Ashley and Cody again provided the offense for UMH with 4 and 3 HRs respectively. For the series Corey led all hiters with 10 HRs and 13 RBIs as Josh added 8 and 13, Amos 6 and 6 and Brandon hit 1 HR. UMH was led by Ashley with 9 HRs and 18 RBIs and Corey was the next biggest producer with 3 HRs and 4 RBIs. Eric Lewis added 2 HRs while Blake and Dave hit 1. The last series Friday had TRLF finishing their series with WTP and most of the fireworks came early as WTP put up 7 in the top of the 1st on HRs by Ben Davis and Aaron Drake, only to be tied by TRLF with 7 as Josh had a 2 HR inning and Brandon added another. The rest of the game featured 2 more solo shots by Josh and 1 by Brandon for the final score of 10-7, with Josh being the winner. Sunday kicked off a slate of makeup games with the Tigers skirmishing with WTP on CC field. Game 1 was semi close as the Tigers build a 12-3 lead before WTP rallied to the final 12-7 score. Kevin Flax was the offensive star with 4 HRs and 7 RBIs and Justin Wolverton added a granny. WTP was led by Ben Davis with 2 HRs while Aaron Drake and Michael Brown both crushed HRs. Adam Ellars notched the win on the mound. Game 2 was even more low scoring as WTP did not manage to score a single run and the Tigers put up just 7 - on 2 HRs by Adam and a 3 run blast by Kevin and solo shot by Justin. Chris Garrard claimed the pitching win. Game 3 featured more scoring as the Tigers built a 13-1 lead on 4 Adam Ellars HRs before WTP got in gear and scored 4 via a Ben Davis 2 run blast. Kevin Flax claimed the pitching win and Chris Garrard hit 2 HRs while Kevin and Justin added solo shots. For the series Kevin led all hitters with 6 HRs and 11 RBIs while Adam also had 6 HRs to accompany his 9 RBIs. Justin's 1st series netted him 3 HRs and 5 RBIs while Chris added 2 HRs and 6 RBIs. Ben led WTP with 3 HRs while Aaron and Michael had 1 HR each. NFC squared off against the Legends on J&M in what proved to be a very close, but weird series. Game 1 was NFC's until the final frame as the Legends had difficulty getting off the mark against the pitching of Eric Cox. Building a 8-4 lead on 2 Tyler "Laser Shots" Depugh HRs, the Legends were finally able to turn the tide with 8 runs in the bottom of the 5th - the final blow being a 3 run walkoff by Levi Driggs. 4 Legends HRs in the inning came with 2 strikes in the count, on good pitches by Eric. Levi led all hitters with 4 HRs and 9 RBIs while Jerry and Phill both hit 2 dingers. Aside from Tyler's 2 HRs, Matt Cox added 1 for NFC. Jerry took the pitching win. Game 2 was even stranger as the Legends hit balls off the noodles, cue ball spinners and 2 strike desperation HRs enroute to a 17-7 win with Phill being WP. Levi again led the Legends with 3 HRs and 9 RBIs while Tyler Wiget got untracked for 2 HRs and both Phill and Jerry added 1 HR. The Brothers Cox (Eric and Matt) hit a HR apiece and Mr. Laser Shots added a solo blast. Game 3 was a close affair until the 3rd, with NFC up 9-2 the Legends exploded for 15 runs and then held on to win 17-11. Jerry led in the effor with 3 HRs while Levi and Phill added 2 HRs and Tyler 1. Tyler again provided the only NFC HR and the other Tyler (Wiget) took the pitching win. For the series Levi led all hitters with 9 HRs and 20 RBIs while Phill continued his solid hitting, crushing 5 HRs. Jerry added 4 to the mix and Tyler 2. NFC was led by Tyler with 4 HRs while Matt crushed 2 and Eric 1.
Upset Award of the Week Unlike Week 5, where upsets abounded, there were no real upsets in Week 6 games - pretty much exactly what we predicted - that Major League teams would adjust and reclaim some of those close games. We will keep focused on the AAA teams next move - which comes in the Playoffs - where the stakes are much higher. Herbie Strange State Farm 3CWL Wiffler of the Week Return to Top
If by virtue of the fact he made it through all the games, Week 6 Wiffler of the Week goes to a member of our newest team - the Tigers. Playing in 6 back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back games on Friday night, then 4 more on Sunday, leading his team to a 9-1 record, with 2 pitching wins, 22 HRs and 36 RBIs and 44 Runs scored in the marathon sessions - Kevin Flax was the model of consistency, leading the Tigers in HRs in several series. For his stamina and consistency, Kevin lays claims to 3CWL Wiffler of Week 6 and, like the rest of the Tigers, who all contributed mightily, earns a much deserved rest.
