2013 3CWL Week 7 Series Summaries 3CWL Week 7 was a week of series clean-ups, playoff positioning and a championship. It started innocently enough with a pedestrian UMH versus WTP - with no real skin on the line but resulted in a shocker anyway. Then it was cleanup from opening night of the PVB vs Legends series - which would set the stage for the big Kahuna of the weekend - NFC vs PVB for the Contenders Division championship. Rounding out the weekend was a TRLF vs Redlegs series in which the Reds were just trying to get back to work after a couple of weeks offs. UMH vs WTP took place on CC field with UMH being the home team. Almost from the start it was apparent something was amiss as the normally productive UMH lineup was able to produce only single runs in each of the 2nd-5th innings. With the AAA bonus and a 2 in inning 2 from an Eli McKee 2 run blast, WTP had all they would need to win game 1. Ben Davis added a 2 run dinger for insurance in the 4th to make the final 7-4 and Kannon claimed the game from the mound as David Page provided most of the fireworks for UMH with 2 solo HRs to accompany a 2 run HR by Cody Burdett. Game 2 was nearly an identical copy of game 1 as UMH managed only solo runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th frames for a total of 3, derived via 2 more HRs by Cody. WTP answered with HRs from Eli and Ben to provide the winning margin of 6-3 as Ben picked up another mound win. Game 3 featured more scoring by both teams as WTP added 3 and then 5 in the 2nd and 4th innings as Eli crushed 3 HRs and drove in 7 in the 15-8 win. Ben added another 2 HRs and Michael Brown picked up the win while Eli recorded his 1st official save as DRP. UMH found more success at the plate as Blake got untracked, crushing 2 HRs to match Dave's 2 and Cody's 1. For the series Eli led all hitters with 5 HRs and 10 RBIs while battery mate Ben added 4 HRs and 8 RBIs. Dave and Cody both crushed 4 HRs for UMH while Blake checked in with 2 on the night. PVB versus the Legends turned into a setup series as the short handed PVB did try and steal game 2 by staking an early 5-0 lead after 2 innings. The Legends found their groove and Levi, Jerry, Phill and Collin connected for 15 HRs in the last 3 innings to win game 2 of the series 19-8 with Phil taking the win on the mound. Levi mashed 7 HRs while Jerry added 5 and Collin 3. John Kepler, Tyler Wiget and Dave Fisher all crushed 2 HRs in the losing effort. Game 1 on Opening Night had the Legends managing to hold off PVB 12-8 behind the pitching of Jerry and ace reliever Levi, as well as 3 HRs from each. Gabe led PVB with 3 dingers in the game. Game 3 of the series was something of a wash as the Legends put double digits up in 2 of the first 3 innings and went on to win by a score of 30-10 after 4 innings. Jerry used his last 2 innings to pick up another win and hit 4 HRs to lead the Legends while Collin and Levi added 3 each and Phill had 1. Dave hit the lone PVB HR in the game. For the series Levi led all hitters with 13 HRs and 23 RBIs while Jerry trailed behind at 12 HRs and 22 RBIs. Collin Hill added 6 HRs and 9 RBIs while Phill tacked on 3 and 9. Dave Fisher led all PVBers with 4 HRs and 9 RBIs while both John and Tyler hit 3 HRs.
The Tralfamadorians have spent the better part of the season on the edge of explosion and Sunday night the Redlegs were the unfortunate recipients of their accumulated frustrations. Corey White inked his name into the record books with a 9 HR 14 RBI game 1, to which Josh added 5 more HRs as Amos picked up the win on the mound and added an HR in the 21-12 win. The Redlegs had a good game offensively as Blake Rinehart crushed 4 HRs and all other Reds added 1 HR to the effort. Game 2 was another high scoring affair as Amos had his turn at the power wheel, crushing 5 HRs to compliment the 3 each hit by Josh and Corey. Not to be outdone, Blake hit 3 more for the Redlegs in the 21-13 losing effort and Brad Miller smashed 2. Josh Wonderleigh picked up the win from the mound. Game 3 also featured a fair amount of offense as Corey again went yard early and often, finishing with 3 HRs in the nightcap while Josh crushed 2 and Amos 1. Blake and Brad went yard 2 times each and Travis Rinehart once in the 13-8 game 3 loss as Dustin Weaver claimed the pitching win. For the series Corey led all hitters with 15 HRs and 29 RBIs - to claim a place in the all time single game record books. Josh had a good series with 10 HRs and 14 RBI while Amos also had his best series of the year with a 7 HR 12 RBI performance. The Redlegs were not without their share of offensive success - a good series to enter the playoffs on despite being swept. Ironman Blake Rinehart continued his hot ways crushing 8 HRs with 12 RBIs. Brad Miller added 5 HRs while Travis hit 2 and newcomer Evan Gallaugher crushed 1. The series of the week was the PVB vs NFC series which, after 6 weeks of play, wound up being the Contenders Division championship. PVB entered the series at 9-9 while NFC came in at 8-10. The team that won the series would be the Division champ and get 2nd pick of who to play in the playoffs, and home field advantage in their bracket. Game 1 quickly turned into the Jarren Iles show as Jarren crushed 3 long HRs to left field, resulting in 7 RBIs and all the runs that would be needed to win. By the time NFC got on the scoreboard via Luke Detty HR, PVB had built an 8-0 lead on the way to a 10-2 win. Dave Fisher picked up the win and also added 2 HRs while Eric Cox added the other NFC run via HR. Game 2 was much closer with NFC getting an early lead via a Tyler "Laser Shots" Depugh 2 run dinger. The lead was shortlived as both Dave Fisher and Jeff Iles added 2 run HRs of their own in the bottom frame. NFC did manage to claim their 1st lead in the top of the 3rd on HRs by Luke and Tyler and held the lead for an inning. PVB held NFC in the top of the 4th and then reclaimed the lead with HRs by Jarren, Dave and Jeff and then sealed the game and the series by holding NFC scoreless in the 5th with John Kepler being the winning pitcher. Game 3 was all PVB as Jarren crushed 3 HRs to drive in 10 and also went the distance on the mound in the 18-5 win to sweep the series. Jarren led all hitters with 7 HRs and 19 RBIs while Dave added 4 HRs and Jeff 2. Both Luke Detty and Tyler Depugh crushed 2 HRs in the losing effort while Eric Cox added 1. This may well be a case of "he who laughs last, laughs best" as PVB and NFC lock up with season elimination on the line in the first round of the playoffs. It should be a very, very interesting series with PVB being the home team on J&M field.
Upset Award of the Week The biggest surprise this week was the total fold of UMH in their series against WTP. This was the confluence of eroding play by UMH and dramatically improved play by WTP and both offer intriguing possibilities in the first round of the playoffs. The confluence resulted in WTP sweeping the series 3-0, the first time UMH has ever been swept by an inter division opponent. UMH faces the vaunted Tigers in the first round of the playoffs. Can they get it back together for a series ? They have been giant slayers in the past, already defeating the Tigers, and the Bulldogs (2011 and 2013 London champs) this year. Will WTP continue their improvement and challenge last year's World Series Runner-Ups the Tralfamadorians, who TRLF defeated 2-1 in their series but with each game decided by 3 runs or less ? Again, a very intriguing series on tap for Thursday evening. Herbie Strange State Farm 3CWL Wiffler of the Week Return to Top
The 3rd Capital Wiffleball League Week 7 Wiffler of the Week was a fairly easy choice, although there were several very worthy applicants. Jarren Iles led PVB in claiming the Contenders Division crown with a sweep in their series with NFC. In the series Jarren crushed 7 long, impressive HRs and drove in 19 RBIs, all while adding a win on the mound also. Blake Rinehart continues to defy cancer, and the odds, crushing 8 HRs to accompany his 13 RBIs in their losing effort against TRLF. Levi Driggs had a pedestrian night for him in the Legends series against Contenders Division leader PVB. A pedestrian night resulting in 13 HRs and 23 RBIs - equaled only 2 other times this year. Eli McKee had a solid night in WTP's sweep of UMH, crushing 5 HRs to compliment his 10 RBIs and pitching win. But this week's Wiffer of the Week goes, as is normally the case when the record books are broached, goes to the record book broacher - in this case Corey White. Corey crushed 15 HRs and 29 RBIs in TRLF's sweep of the Redlegs, including 9 HRs and 14 RBIs in game 1. Congratulations to Corey for his entry into the record books and for being the 3CWL Week 7 Wiffler of the Week !
