2011 COWL Week 6 Summaries Week 6 was a week of conference position matchups as the leaders and 2nd / 3rd place teams in the American League squared off against their counterparts in the National League, with the matchups being key to the final playoff positions in the American League. PVB initiated the week with a series sweep of the Knights on Wednesday. While the Knights fought bravely in game 1, they eventually fell 11-9 at the hands of 4 Gabe Fisher HRs and 7 RBIs. Brett Fisher picked up the win with Amos and Nathan both hacked 3 HRs and 4 RBIs in the contest. Game 2 was a route as PVB mangled the Knights 22-3 as Gabe Fisher again powered PVB with 5 HRs and 10 RBIs. Trevor picked up the win. Game 3 was close until the 4th inning when PVB exploded for 9 runs to blow open the close game with the final score being 15-5. Dave Fisher picked up the win and PVB used a balanced hitting attack with Brett leading the way with 9 RBIs. In their 2nd series of the week PVB squared off against the surging U who had their vision set on 1st place in the American League. These 2 teams may be the hottest in the league right now and game 1 did not disappoint. Brett Fisher picked up the win in game 1 in a 14-12 barn burner decided in inning 5. Gabe Fisher again led PVB with 4 HRs and 7 RBIs. Game 2 was not as close with Trevor holding U batters in check en route to a 21-9 win. Gabe and Dad Dave led the offensive attack with 45 HRs each and 10 and 6 RBIs respectively. The U eeked out a precious win in game 3 by the narrowest of margins 13-11 as Brent picked up the crucial win. Shondrick and Shay powered the U attack on field TLC with 2 HRs each. Gabe Fisher and Dave added 2 each for PVB. GDE squared off against rival Brothers Squared and mostly dominated the series, winning 3-0. Game 1 was all GDE early as they jumped off to a 16-6 lead enroute to a 22-7 game 1 victory for pitcher Blake Lansing. Dave Page powered the GDE attack with 4 HRs and 10 RBIs in the game. Game 2 was another lopsided affair with GDE putting up 33 runs to 16 for BX2. Eric Lewis went crazy at the plate with 6 HRs and 13 RBIs while Blake Lansing added 4 HRs and 10 RBIs. Eric also picked up the pitching win. Game 3 was much closer with GDE holding on to win 10-9 on the strength of Dave Page pitching. Collin Hill got untracked with 4 HRs and 6 RBIs in the losing effort. The marquee series of the night featured the National League conference leaders Legends against the American League conference leading Redlegs. Game 1 was a very close affair until the Legends put up 16 runs in the top of the 5th, eventually winning 30-11. Levi Driggs continued his London haze, crushing 7 HRs for 16 RBIs. Phil again practiced his best Ricky Henderson impression, delivering 3 inning opening HRs and 5 total for the game. Ronnie Anderson was unconscious for the Redlegs, crushing 5 long HRs for 9 RBis. Ben Cydrus picked up his 5th win on the mound. Game 2 on TLC was a very close game until the Legends added 6 runs in the bottom of the 4th on the back of 2 Jerry Driggs HRs. Levi picked up the win, his first of the year. Game 3 was simply, all Levi, who equaled the league single game HR total even while the game was a mercy rule. Levi crushed 11 HRs and added 17 more RBIs to his career night. Jerry also added 6 HRs and 14 RBIs and Ben stroked 4 HRs. Caleb Stidham, Ronnie and Brad Miller all added 2 HRs for the Redlegs and Phill picked up the 30-14 win. Hopefully, one slow pitch week remains, the 2nd and final fast pitch night and then the playoffs will begin. The American League conference champion is yet to be determined and final playoff positions are up for grabs still.
COWL Wiffler of the Week 6 Return to Top
Levi "Crush" Driggs
While there were a couple of stand out performances from Wifflers this week such as Gabe Fisher (12 HRs 21 RBIs) Eric Lewis (10 HRs 21 RBIs 1 pitching win) and Jerry (13 HRs 24 RBIs), the undisputed Wiffler of Week 6 is unquestionably Levi Driggs. Continuing his absolutely dominating performance at the London tourney (31 HRs in 8 games) Levi led the Legends to a resounding series sweep over the American League leading Redlegs. Simply put, Levi owned games 1 and 3 and just could not be kept in the yard. Along the way he set the series records for most HRs (19), RBIs (35), HRs in a single game and RBIs in a single game (17). Johnny Bench was asked by Marty Brennamen after a 3 run HR game against the Pirates in the 1970's what the key was to hitting good pitches. John said the key to him hitting good pitches was making sure Sparky Anderson (the coach) put Tony Perez's name behind his on the batting lineup scorecard. I know exactly what Johnny meant. Congratulations to "Crush" for a record setting performance and an awe inspiring coming out party at London. If you find a pitch he can't go yard on, let me know. I would like to beat him in home run derby one last time before the sand in my hourglass runs out (better be quick, I am on the downhill stretch).
