2011 COWL Week 8 Summaries Week 8 was the final regular season week with the American League crown still up for grabs, and both leagues trying to win as many non conference games as possible to secure home field advantage for their respective team representative in the World Series. In the key pairing of the night the Redlegs entered their series with the streaking Gookies needing to pull out a single victory in the series to secure the best record in the American League. They wasted little time in doing so battling GDE for a tough fought 23-18 series opening victory with Blake Rinehart picking up the key win. For the Redlegs Blake helped his own cause, crushing a personal best 5 HRs to go with his 8 RBIs. Ronnie Anderson made a clutch contribution with 5 HRs of his own to accompany 10 RBIs. Eric Lewis and Dave Page tried to keep the pace by smashing 5 HRs of their own in the game. Game 2 was all GDE as they struck early and often, building to a 13-4 margin of victory with Andy Russell picking up the win on the mound. Andy helped his cause by crushing 4 HRs to go with 9 RBIs. The rubber match of the series was even more lopsided as GDE returned to form disposing of the Redlegs 18-2. Dave page picked up the pitching win as Andy and Dave both delivered 3 HRs in the rain. The newly blooded Young Guns matched up against the surging PVB, shocking the old guys in the opener in 10-5 fashion. Will Nathans picked up the win as Nick, Will and Joe all delivered 2 HRs in the win. Game 2 saw PVB getting on track, thumping the Young Guns 17-9 as they steadily built their lead through out the game. Brent Fisher returned to pick up the big win while also crushing 2 crucial HRs in the effort. The rubber match of the series was determined in the bottom of the 2nd as PVB put up 8 uncontested runs in the inning to win the close game 10-8. Brent Fisher again supplied the offensive punch by going yard 2 times for 5 RBIs. Shane crushed 2 HRs for 5 RBIs for the improving Young Guns, who enter the playoffs as probably the most dangerous team due to their improvement. The last series of the night featured National League leading Legends versus the Brothers Squared, who were kind enough to recruit some new teammates so their season could finish. The real question in this series centered on if Levi Driggs could catch his old man in the home run race and the race did not disappoint. The Legends started slowly, actually trailing the BrothersX2 going into the top of the 3rd. A 21 run inning featured back-to-back-to-back HRs by Levi and Jerry as they battled for the HR crown and both delivered 10 RBIs. The Legends won by the mercy rule 27-5 with the aged still leading the HR race by 1. Ben picked up the win on the mound. Game 2 on TLC was played in a driving rain with Jerry and Ben leading the Legends to a hard fought 15-11 win by hitting 2 HRs each, leaving the elder up by 2 in the count. Collin Hill single handedly kept the BrothersX2 in the game by crushing 5 long HRs to deat center field while Levi picked up the win. Game 3 stayed on TLC and the Legends delivered early, scoring 24 runs in the first 3 innings to win 24-2 by the mercyu rule. Levi charged back into HR crown contention, hitting his 6th HR in the game to Jerry's 4, tying the HR count at 81 each, a new regular season record.
