2012 COWL Week 6 Series Summaries Return to Top The real winner in COWL Week 6 was the weather. After the Friday night games were postponed by near 100 mph winds which ripped up the windscreen fence, the commissioning team labored all day Saturday to repair the damage. Friday's games were reset to be played on Sunday evening, only to have another fierce pop up storm race thru dumping baseball sized hail and cancelling all games. AP vs UMH did manage to get 2/3rds of their series in with one game left to Thursday, July 5th kicked off week 6 with the Knights taking on cross division foe the U in the first series of the week with the U being home team on J&M field. The Knights wasted no time and quickly built a 9-0 lead as all 4 Knights players crushed HRs. The U fought back with 7 runs in the bottom of the 3rd as all U players turned the table by smashing HRs of their own. The Knights added the deciding 2 runs in the top of the 4th and held onto withstand a 5th inning rally by the U as Amos Jones picked up the win from the mound in an 11-8 effort. Game 2 began in identical fashion as the Knights jumped out to a 6-0 lead after 2 on HRs by Corey and Josh. The U struck for 4 runs in the top of the 3rd as Tyler got hot and crushed 2 HRs in the inning. The Knights responded in kind with 4 runs of their own as Amos hit 2 HRs in the frame and the Knigths carried a 11-7 lead heading into the 5th. The U did manage to mount a charge, scoring 3 runs to close the score to 11-9, but with the go-ahead run at the plate and only 1 out, could not manage to push any more runs across. Josh Wonderleigh picked up the win. Game 3 was a slugfest as the U jumped out to an 8-2 lead on Brent Hoovers 1st explosion of the night as he hit 2 HRs in the 1st inning. The teams traded runs in the second and the 3rd remained scoreless. The Knights got their O in gear in inning 4 with 5 runs on a Corey White 3 run HR but the U increased their lead to 14-10 with HRs by John Kepler, Brent and Jordan Nelson. Inning 5 had the Knights tallying 5 runs on an HR by Dustin and some nifty small ball base running as the Knights took the lead 15-14. The U played small ball to score 1 to tie and send the match into extra innings. The Knights made their claim by scoring 4 runs in the top of the 6th on more small ball exploits and the U again returned the favor, playing small ball and mixing in another Brent HR to pull within 1 at 19-18 with 1 out, 2 men on and the winning run on 1st. A line drive and grounder to short ended the U's rally and the Knights completed a hard fought sweep wherein the U could just not get a clutch hit at a key moment. On the plus side, they did score significant runs and appear to be gearing up for the post season. For the series Corey White led all hitters with 6 HRs and 11 RBIs. Josh Wonderleigh and Amos Jones added 4 HRs and Dustin Weaver 3. Brent Hoover crushed 6 HRs for the U to accompany his 9 RBIs while Jordan Nelson, John Kepler and Tyler Wiget all added 3 HRs each. The Knights climb back into 3rd place in the Contenders Division, just a single game back of division leaders Redlegs and PVB, who play each other in the final series of the year. Series 2 pitted the Contenders leading Redlegs vs the U, with the U playing in their last series of the regular season and hoping for continuation of their improving fortunes at the plate. Game 1 matched ace John Kepler vs Redlegs ace Brad Miller with the U being home team on J&M field. The Reds jumped out to and early 4-0 lead on a continuation of Blake Rinehart's hot bat and a timely HR by Brad Miller, but the U slowing inched back into the game with 2 in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd and 3 on the 4th on HRs by Brent Hoover's best night of the year and a clutch HR by Jordan Nelson. John Kepler blanked the Reds over the last 4 innings to key an 8-4 breakout win for the U. Game 2 saw the U staking an early 3-2 win on HRs by Tyler Wiget and Brent but the Reds put 2 up of their own. After a 1 run inning by the U in the 3rd and another scoreless Redlegs bottom of the inning the U led 4-2. The U added 2 in the 4th on a Jordan HR, and Brent held the Reds to 1 run in the final 2 frames to claim a 6-3 and guaranteed series victory for the U. The Reds rebounded in game 3 by scoring 4 in inning 1 on 2 Blake HRs, Once again the U slowly climbed back into the game on HRs by Brent and Tyler and the score was knotted at 4 after 3. The Redlegs jumped back into action in the 4th scoring 3 in both the top of the 4th and 5th innings while Blake held the U to a single run in the 4th, securing a 10-5 win and RBIs while Tyler smashed 3 HRs. Blake and Brad led the Redlegs with 4 HRs each while Adam added 2. With a single series to go against Conference leader PVB the Redlegs stand at 9-9. The Dirt Dogs locked up with Champions division leader Legends on TLC with the Legends choosing to be visitors and sporting a new player in visiting vacationing Dave Cooper. The Legends sent ace Jerry Driggs to the mound against DD's Eric Cox. Scoring started slowly with the score tied at 3 after 2. The Legends pushed across 9 runs in the top of the 3rd on multi HR innings by Levi, Jerry and Phil. After a 2 run DD bottom of the 3rd the Legends added 5 more and held DD to 3 total in the bottom of 4th and 5th enroute to a 17-8 game 1 win. Game 2 saw a quicker offensive start by both teams as the Legends put across 12 in the 1st 2 innings on a 4 HR effort by Jerry. The Dirt Dogs did get going in the 3rd and eventually put up 7 as Legends developing ace Phil claimed a 12-7 victory for the home team. Game 3 quickly turned into a HR fest for the Legends as Levi, Jerry and Phil exploded for 16 HRs in the 1st 3 innings to build a 21-1 lead before the DD rallied for 12 runs in the 3rd, eventually falling in by a 21-13 mark with Levi Driggs continuing his development from the hill. For the series Levi led all hitters with 15 HRs and 21 RBIs. Jerry added 11 HRs to go with his 21 RBIs and Phil had a solid night with 5 HRs. Dave Cooper picked up 2 saves in the series sweep. For the Dirt Dogs Luke Detty had a good night, hitting multiple tape measure shots over the light pole in right field, finally ending with 5 HRs and 13 RBIs, Eric Cox added 3 HRs to accompany his 9 RBIs while both Steve and Tyler had solid nights with 2 HRs. On the Friday of the big storm, Abusement Park and UMH attempted to get their series in before the winds came. It was all UMH in game 1 as they set an all time record with 35 runs as Andy Russell returned to crush 6 HRs with 12 RBIs, and Dave Page and Blake Lansing crush 4 HRs of their own while collecting 10 and 6 RBIs respectively. Eric Lewis added 3 HRs in the blitzkreig. Inning 4 was the explosion as UMH scored an all time record 19 runs and hit 9 HRs in the frame and seal the final at 35-9. Collin Hill had his usual solid game leading AP with 3 HRs and 6 RBIs and new commer Justin Manson smashing his first 2 HRs to accompany his 3 RBIs. Game 2 ended with UMH winning by the mercy rule 19-3, but it was a more reserved game as Andy led all hitters with 3 HRs and 8 RBIs while both Blake, Dave and John added 1 HR. Collin paced AP with 2 HRs while Justin's sister Emily crushed 2 HRs for AP. This series will be completed before the Friday, July 13th conclusion of the regular season. The final series of the week matched PVB vs AP as PVB sought to continue their surge to the top of the Contenders division. On a night with a light breeze blowing out to left and light air on TLC, PVB began their barrage with a 9 run 1st inning utilizing 3 HRs from Dave Fisher, including a granny. AP countered with 4 of their own on HRs by Collin and Corbin Hill. But PVB was too much as a 4 then 2 7 run innings and a total of 17 team HRs in game 1 drove them to a 32-17 win. Dave Fisher led all hitters with 6 HRs while Gabe Fisher added 4 and both Brett Fisher and Trevor Thomas hit 3. Brett picked up the win on the mound. For AP Collin had a big game hitting 6 HRs while Hannah Miller and Corbin Hill hit 2. Game 2 was all PVB from the first as they played add on each inning in building up a 16-1 mercy rule win in the 4th. Trevor provide the fireworks hitting 3 consecutive HRs with 8 RBIs to lead PVB and Dave Fisher picked up the win. Game 3 was more of the same as PVB scored 19 runs in thru 2 to cinch a series sweep with a 20-3 mercy rule win. Trevor Thomas picked up the win as Dave, Gabe and Brett Fisher all hit 2 HRs. For the series Dave led all hitters with 9 HRs and 24 RBIs, including 15 in game 1. Gabe added 7 HRs and 13 RBIs while Brett and Trevor both had 6 HRs. For AP Collin led with 6 HRs and 12 RBIs and brother Corbin added 5 and 5.
Upset Award of the Week Return to Top The surprise upset of week 6 definitely goes to the U. After taking the solid Knights to the wire in all 3 of their series games on Thursday, the U finally broke thru against the Contenders division leaders the Redlegs, taking 2 of 3 and throwing the Contenders race into complete chaos. The Redlegs are 9-9 with 1 series left vs PVB. PVB is 8-7 with a series against the Redlegs and the dangerous Abusement Park remaining. The Knights seem to be in the driver's seat with a 9-9 record and 1 series left vs the Dirt Dogs. 12 wins will likely win this division, meaning a sweep by either the Knights and / or the Redlegs or PVB could ensure their conference championship. Tie breakers for conference champ determined as follows; 2 teams - head to head series results 3 or more teams - in conference record Series of the Week Return to Top Champions Division Championship Uncle Musclez Hour vs Legends The COWL “Series of the week” for week 6 was a rematch of the 2010 COWL World Series - one of the top 5 All Time ESPN classics. Uncle Musclez Hour - the reconstituted Gookie Dawkins Experience squaring off against the 2010 and 2011 COWL World Series champions Legends. UMH graciously volunteered to hold this series on Sunday, July 8th, enabling the Redlegs vs PVB Contenders Division championship game to be the week 7 series of the week. Both teams entered the series somewhat short handed and not at full strength. UMH was without lead HR crusher Andy Russell and shortstop highlight reel Eric Lewis playing thru the throes of Mono. The Legends were without the service of 2011 Cy Young recipient and 14 game winner Ben Cydrus, resulting in the Legends facing offensive juggernaut UMH with only 3 defenders - an unenviable task at best. Janae Driggs joined the fray for the Legends in game 2 much to the relief of the Legends 3.
GAME ONE - Starting Pitchers: Dave Page (4 wins) vs. Jerry Driggs (5 wins)
The league's 2 winningest pitchers locked up in game 1 in a series that promised to do significant damage to the ERAs of all pitchers involved. Dave Page immediately validated the prophecy by leading off inning 1 with a monster HR to center. The Legends took offense and began their crusade with back-to-back HRs by Jerry and Levi, with Jerry adding a 2nd in the inning as the Legends jumped out to an 8-1 lead. UMH fought right back with HRs by Dave, Blake Lansing and Eric Lewis to score 5 in the 2nd. Levi Driggs took his turn at 2 HRs in an inning in the 2nd to add to Phill King's 1st HR and another by Jerry for 6 more and a lead of 14-6 after 2. The teams traded runs in the 3rd and 4th and the 5th began with the Legends on top 15-9. Dave, ERic and Blake opened up the 5th with HRs, cutting the score to 15-11 and the Legends brought in Levi in an attempt to staunch the bleeding and close UMH out. Levi gave up another HR to Dave and Eric, but wiled Blake into lining out and after a good play by Phill on a John Bruce liner, retired Dave on a pop to end the game with the tying run on 2nd and the go ahead on 1st. Jerry and Levi led the Legends with 4 HRs each as Levi provided 8 RBIs and Jerry 6. Phill added a HR. Dave crushed 4 HRs in the losing effort while disease ridden Eric swam thru the haze to crush 4 of his own, as Blake contributed 2 HRs to go with his 5 RBIs.

Game two opened with UMH as the home team. The Legends jumped out to a quick start with 2 runs on a Jerry HR in the 1st. UMH countered with a 3 run Eric Lewis blast in their half to lead 3-2 after 1. Inning 2 was the 1st real advent of a Legends inning in 2012 as they put up 15 in the inning on 3 HRs by Janae, 2 each by Jerry and Levi and a solo by Phill. This run included 7 straight HRs, a league record. UMH was blanked in the bottom of the 2nd and the Legends petered out to only score 2 on a Jerry HR in the 3rd. UMH showed signs of Life, staving off a mercy rule loss via the bat of Eric Lewis on a 3 run HR in the 3rd. After adding 2 more on a Levi 2 run bomb in the 4th UMH again went quietly in their half. Jerry and Levi both had multi run HR innings in the 5th as the Legends scored 6 more times. UMH came up empty in the bottom of the 5th as the Legends claimed game 2 27-7. GAME THREE - Starting Pitchers: Levi Driggs (3 wins) vs. John Bruce (3 wins)
With the Champions division championship secure, game 3 became a game about pride, and who the HR champ would be. Levi, attempting to unseat the old man from his 3 year perch at the top, led by 3 HRs entering the contest. UMH struck first with 4 in the 1st on HRs by Dave and Blake. The Legends launched in their half of the inning, pushing across 16 runs on 10 HRs in the inning - 3 by Janae, 3 by Jerry, 3 by Levi and 1 by Phill. While the Legends hitting was superb, their field was atrocious, as they gave very little support to Levi, missing a routine grounder and a pop-up or 2 in both the 2nd and 3rd innings. holding UMH is a daunting task on 3 outs per inning. When given 4 or 5 you will get a spanking - and they administered one, scoring 7 in the 2nd and 12 in the 3rd while holding the Legends to 5 in the innings. Dave Page exploded, hitting 4 consecutive HRs over 2 innings while John Bruce, Blake and Eric all added 2 HRs in the barrage. The 4th saw UMH scoring 3 more on another Dave HR, and UMH took their first lead of the night at 25-19. The Legends inched back with a 2 run HR by Jerry in the bottom of the 4th, then held UMH scoreless to start the 5th. A Levi 2 run HR followed by another 2 run dinger by Jerry cut the score to 26-25 with only 1 out, but the Legends could not tie the game as UMH pitcher Blake Lansing coerced Janae to hit into a game ending pop up.
The final game of the series was a barn burner with plenty of offense, but both teams showed fatigue as the fielding was less than stellar. With the series win the Legends garner 1st choice as to their playoff opponent in round 1. The Contenders Division champion will gain second choice, and regardless of the outcome of UMH's final series, they will have the best remaining record in the league and receive 3rd choice. As to the HR race, Jerry hit one more HR than Levi but fell 2 short in his bid to once again win the HR title on behalf of the aged and infirmed of the Wiffle Ball world.

Series Synopsis The annual clash of UMH / GDE vs the Legends was once again one for the record books. Despite both teams be at less than full strength, an all time series record 66 HRs and top 3 run total of 114. Dave Page, Jerry Driggs, Levi Driggs and Phill King all made posts in the all time record books for the series. As is usual for all series, even those with record setting offense, defense was the key to winning. In games 1 and 2 the Legends turned 2 double plays each game - 3 of those being ending ending after multiple runs had scored with men left on base. Levi made multiple diving web gems in the outfield and even Janae turned in a stellar ground ball corral on a John Bruce lace. In game 3 UMH made the plays with both Blake making several FTD leaps down the left field line on Legend laser beams and John and Eric taking turns at short batting down and retiring batters after wicked line drives. While the Legends came out on top this night, there is a high likelihood these two giants will meet again for more fireworks in the near future with a division pennant on the line. The U's Brent Hoover Jerry Driggs of Legends Fame
Our COWL Wiffler of Week 5 derives from the Series of the Week, and from the Upset Series of the Week. Champions week kicked off as the two best teams statistically in COWL locked up to determine who would be the Champions Division winner and the series did not lack for long bombs and big plays. In the Upset Series of the week the surging U stunned the Contenders leading Redlegs, leaving the league race in sheer chaos.. There were other very credible applicants as Corey White, Josh Wonderleigh and Amos Jones all had solid nights for the Knights as they defeated the U in the early series of the week. Jordan Nelson continued his marked improvement at the plate in the U series shocker with the Redlegs, smashing 4 HRs and 10 RBIs. Luke Detty had a solid night for the Dirt Dogs, crushing several tape measure HRs as DD gave the Legends all they wanted in a close series. Tyler Wiget played a key role in the U's upset of the Redlegs. First Co-Wiffler of Week 6 goes to Brent Hoover, who has keyed the U's resurgence at the plate. For the week Brent crushed 11 HRs and had 19 RBIs, plus a pitching win. Brent's was the model of consistency crushing 2 HRs in 5 of the U's 6 games, including the go-ahead variety in the late innings of 2 of those key wins. Matching Brent is a first for COWL. League Commish Jerry Driggs finally gets props for a very solid night in the Legends championship series with the U. Jerry had a series high 16 HRs and 31 RBI's - both good enough for top 3 entries in the all time record book. Although Jerry ceded the title of HR king to Levi, he can take some solace in the fact he is now a member of the exclusive COWL Wiffler of the Week club - never having earned this honor in year prior. Congratulations to Brent and Jerry for their acquisition of the much coveted State Farm green jackets and entry into this most discerning club.
