The 2011 NWBA Fast Pitch State Championship featured 8 teams from the 4 corners of the state, names recognizable as being very good in both slow and fast pitch. As to be expected the games were very close, with very few games reaching the 10 run mark. A very fast pitch veteran Purple Mooses won the pool A tournament going undefeated with wins of 7-5 and 5-4. The Dirtybirds, a primarily slow pitch team that has had significant success at London won the pool B tournament with a record of 2-0. The Legends and PVB finished as pool runners-up. The first round of the double elimination tournament featured an excellent game between the Young Guns and Wiff My Balls with the Young Guns scratching out a 7-6 win to advance to play the top seed Purple Mooses who beat the U 21-6. In the bottom bracket the Dirtybirds defeated PVB in a 9-4 contest while the Legends disposed of All Things Equal 3-0. The semi final games were very close with the Purple Mooses defeating the Young Guns 13-12 with Joe, Jamie and Craig each hitting 2 HRs apiece. For the Young Guns Shane and Nick both contributed a HR. In the bottom bracket semi the Dirtybirds used excellent pitching by Kalan Perdue to blank the Legends 4-0. Offense was supplied by Jeremy Greene who hit 2 HRs in the win. In the winner's bracket final the Dirtybirds again used fantastic pitching to win 4-1 over the Purple Mooses, with Josh Kuhn providing all the offense necessary in a 3 run HR. The loser's bracket resulted in some very close games and Wiff My Balls got their first win over All Things Equal 5-3. The U fell to a surging PVB at the hands of a Dave Fisher Granny and a 3 run HR by Eric Young. WMB would see their streak come to end as the Legends opened the loser's bracket semis with an 8-1 win featuring HRs by Phill and Levi. In the upper bracket PVB continued their wining ways by ending the Young Guns night 5-3. The Legends then tangled with PVB in the loser's bracket final and prevailed 7-3 behind timely HRs by Levi and Phill. For PVB Eric Young and Dave Fisher both crushed HRs. The Purple Mooses elected to bow out due to fatigue which placed the Legends in the state championship game against the undefeated Dirtybirds. This game was much closer than the first with the Dirtybirds getting an early HR by Josh Kuhn and leading 1-0 heading into the top of the 4th. The Legends managed to get on the board by playing small ball, pushing across 2 runs on exactly 1 hit. The Dirtybirds needed a run to stay in the game and had 2 men on base in the bottom of the 4th with 1 out when Josh Kuhn provided the highlight of the night, crushing a 3 run walk-off HR to claim the 2011 NWBA Fast Pitch State Championship for the Dirtybirds. Slow Pitch Summary Return to top The 2011 NWBA Slow Pitch State Championship was contested between 9 teams on Friday and Saturday, September 2nd & 3rd. Early games in the Friday night pools under the lights were a precursor to the close games which followed on Saturday. In the first game of the event Wiff My Balls built a 25-19 lead on the U through 4 1/2 innings, only to fall the the U 26-25 on a 3 run walk-off HR by the U's Shondrick Locklear. Wiff My Balls followed this barn burner up with a 7-6 walk-off of their own over the PVB.
Close games were the norm in the Saturday pools as the Purple Mooses won the Saturday pool tournament with a win over Aqua 13-13 Falls who finished 2nd, via a 10-9 victory over the Dirtybirds in a wiffle back. The 6 pool B games were decided by a total of 11 runs and the biggest spread was 4 runs. The pattern did not change as the double elimination tournament started as the top seed Purple Mooses were upended in the 1st round by a rejuvenated Pleasant Valley Boys who came to life hitting 14 HRs in the wind aided affair. On the other end of the bracket the top seeded Legends played without star shortstop and leadoff man Phill King but managed to pull out a win over the Young Guns in a high scoring 22-17 game. Round 2 saw a fantastic game in the upper bracket as the Dirtybirds put up 9 runs in the top of the 1st against the short-handed Legends. The Legends returned the favor, scoring 14 runs in their half of the inning on 4 HRs each by Jerry and Levi Driggs. With the addition of Phill in the 2nd inning the game became much more defense oriented as both teams cooled and the Legends took a 19-15 lead into the bottom of the 5th. After a Josh Kuhn 2 run HR to cut the lead to 19-17 the Legends retired the last 2 batters to seal the win in the close game and advance to the championship of the winner's bracket. Aqua Falls was able to cool the red hot PVBs in the bottom bracket holding them to just 5 runs and marching behind Sean's 3 HR game claim the lower bracket championship by a score of 15-5. The winner's bracket championship was won by the Legends 17-5 as they jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st and Aqua Falls could get no closer than 6 runs. Jerry Driggs led the Legends with 4 HRs and 9 RBIs and Levi Driggs added 3 HRs. Sean again led Aqua Falls with 2 HRs and 4 RBIs in the effort. After PVB beat the Dirtybirds in a thrilling extra inning loser's bracket game, Aqua Falls again polished off PVB in the loser's bracket final, winning 10-7 after a 5 run last inning rally by PVB. Sean once again led the Aqua attack pouring out 2 HRs and 5 RBIs in the game. The state championship game started in fine fashion for Aqua Falls as they put up 4 runs on some timely hitting and a 2 run HR by Sean thru the top of 2 to lead 4-0. Two HRs by Jerry Driggs and 5 RBIs got the Legends back on top 5-4 and the Legends held serve in the top of the 3rd by holding Aqua Falls scoreless. Aqua Falls then chose to walk Jerry in the 3rd, and Levi Driggs exacted a high price for the move, hitting 3 HRs in the inning, a 2 run shot, a 3 run HR, and a granny, back-to-back-to-back, all in the bottom of the 3rd. Phill King ended the game with a 2 run HR to left, his only HR of the day, to close the game by the mercy rule at 20-4. On the game Levi Driggs had 3 HRs and 10 RBIs while Jerry added 2 HRs and 7 RBIs. Sean again paced Aqua Falls with 1 HR and 3 RBIs. The Legends posted a perfect 8-0 record for the tournament and win their first WNBA Ohio State Championship.
